TE TAIAO ENVIRONMENT

Patuharakeke are a composite hapū descended from most major iwi groups in the north. These include Ngati Wai, Ngapuhi nui tonu, Ngati Whatua and Te Uri o Hau. We affiliate to a very large number of hapu including Te Uriroroi, Te Koiwi, Te Akitai, Ngati Hau, Ngati Korora, Ngati Taka, Ngati Hine, Te Waiariki, Te Parawhau and many others.

Located on the south side of the Whangarei Harbour, the Patuharakeke rohe boundary stretches on the seaward side, including foreshore and seabed, from a point at the north of Mangawhai Heads to the entrance of the Mangapai River just south of Whangarei. The boundary extends inland to include the Brynderwyn (or Piroa) and Kakanui Ranges.

Seeking Expressions of Interest - Patuharakeke Hapū Representative, Te Kārearea Standing Committee

Patuharakeke hapū is seeking expressions of interest for a mandated representative to sit at Te Kārearea, the Whangārei District Council Standing Committee, via Te Huinga.

About the Role:

This is a governance-level position requiring approx. 14 hours/month commitment, including meetings, focus groups, reading, and reporting back to Te Huinga and hapū hui.

We’re looking for someone who:

Is a uri of Patuharakeke hapū
Understands He Whakaputanga & Te Tiriti in local government contexts
Has strong hapū engagement and relationship skills
Is confident, analytical, and well-organised
Can commit to regular meetings and reporting

Key Dates:

EOI closes: 5pm, Thursday 2 October 2025
Interviews: Monday 6 October, Whangārei Terenga Paraoa
Announcement: Wednesday 8 October
